The Problem With Ducklings Is...

They're just so darn cute!!!
These guys wanted to follow me around today. I led them through the house a couple of times then let them fall asleep for a while before putting them back in their box. The silly things wanted to burrow into my armpit. Under mama's wing, I guess.

This is what happens when you cut too large a hole in the ducklings water jug. (The idea is to cut a hole just big enough for their heads to fit, this way they can get plenty of water and keep their nostrils clean like they need too without splashing the water all over the place as they would if they just had a shallow dish.)
We took the lid off to take pictures. The funny thing is they looked like they were waiting in line. When one hopped out another would hop in. :)

Can you believe these are our chickens? Not so little and fluffy any more...

Very cute. Looks like fun. No movement out of the other duck eggs yet?

Nope. Took out another dead one last night :( I don't think we are going to get any more.

How did they ship them without breaking them?

LOTS of bubble wrap and packing peanuts. The bottom of the box was lined in bubble wrap. Each eggs was wrapped in lots of bubble wrap and stood up in packing peanuts not touching each other. Another layer of bubble wrap on top. None were broken. Sometimes people end up with a box full of broken eggs though.

That would suck royal. Okay so how do you know when they are dead in the egg? Stink? Color? What?

Color. Lack of movement.

The stink comes later. I've not had any start stinking yet. If they look dead I open them or throw them out. I don't want any exploding rotten eggs!

I threw out the last three eggs sunday. All died some time before they were ready to hatch. Two besides the three that hatched made it all the way. But they died without starting to break the shell. I feel bad cause I found out some people help them if they pip the internal membrane but not the shell IF they've been shipped and have damaged air cells. So I wonder if I could've saved those two...

Anyway, all said and done we are very pleased to have three healthy ducklings. I don't know if I will try hatching shipped eggs again. I just hope we have two genders here!! :)
